something old, something new, something borrowed, same milieu. Dead Can Dance were the top-selling artist on old-school 4AD, a more globally-oriented counterpart to esoteric labelmates The Cocteau Twins. Anastasis (“Resurrection”) is an apt title for this album, the duo’s first after a 14 year gap. This record expands upon their sound while reprising beloved motifs, self-reference without redundancy. “Agape” sees violin slashes cede for Lisa Gerrard‘s otherworldly timbre, while “Return of the She-King” buries it under neoclassical vamps and jingling bells.
