I feel like Amon Tobin always hits you with two types of songs: the kind that makes you want to melt into a chair from melody overload, and the kind that pummels you ruthlessly with breakbeat scientology. On Out From Out Where, his fourth studio album on Ninja Tune, Tobin has found a way to combine the two. It’s not necessarily a new sound for him, but it is the most accomplished in finally establishing what that “Amon Tobin sound” is: a post-apocalyptic, futuristic-aint-shit-to-me type of soundtrack. The arrangements are so elaborate on this album that all you have to do is close your eyes and pay attention and a story will unfold through the music. This is the most complex and uncompromising of Amon Tobin’s albums, and it’s also the darkest.
