This is some out there material, something for the adventurous. Future Islands originated in North Carolina, but now reside in Baltimore. Their music is straightforward, not buried in unnecessary production tricks or studio theatrics. The instrumental side of things is innocuous enough, pretty without seeming trite. Keyboard melodies are joined by post punk inspired bass lines and sparse rhythms. The thing that sets Future Islands apart are the vocals of front man Sam Herring; raw and guttural, somewhat dramatic and nearly overdone. But with the skill of a tamed opera singer Herring imbues enough soul into his singing to create a distinctive voice that will win you over with a few listens. “Tomorrow” finds the band joined by a chorus of voices ready to lift you up. Things are a little more restrained on “The Fountain” but there is an undercurrent of emotion that is begging to wash over you. White vinyl pressing.
