Morcheeba’s sophomore release saw the group moving on from trip hop and expanding their sonic pallet. The trio of Skye Edwards, and brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey spent more time writing songs, combining influences from a wide range of styles including pop, lounge, film soundtracks, reggae, jazz, and electronica. The resulting album evinced a more mature and sophisticated sound that showed that Morcheeba had more to give than the majority of their trip hop peers. Their fusion of sounds was further helped along by Edwards’ enchanting voice. Big Calm is still irresistible today.
