Trombonist Rico Rodriguez is a pivotal figure in the reggae-ska-jazz scene. Taught by fellow reggae legend Don Drummond, Rodriguez recorded with many of the top reggae producers (including some crucial Coxsone and Prince Buster tracks); played a part in the 70s ska revival (that’s him on The Specials’ “A Message To You Rudy”); and even released Man From Warieka on Blue Note in 1977. In 1978 a dub version of Warieka was mysteriously released on white label. Once collectors got a whiff, it went on to became a holy grail of reggae-jazz records, fetching $400 plus. This is a reissue of the Japanese pressing of this elusive record, and it sounds damn nice. The dub is not overpowering. It hits that sweet spot, letting the instrumentation breathe and flow. 9 tracks in all, recommended.
