Trombonist Rico Rodriguez is a pivotal figure in the reggae-ska-jazz scene. Taught by fellow reggae legend Don Drummond, Rodriguez recorded with many of the top reggae producers (including some crucial Coxsone and Prince Buster tracks); played a part in the 70s ska revival (that’s him on The Specials‘ “A Message To You Rudy”); and even released Man From Warieka on Blue Note in 1977. In 1978 a dub version of Warieka was mysteriously released on white label. Once collectors got a whiff, it went on to became a holy grail of reggae-jazz records, fetching $400 plus. This is the first official label repress of the elusive record (time to upgrade that white label), and it sounds incredible on 180g vinyl no less. The dub is not overpowering. It hits that sweet spot, letting the instrumentation breathe and flow. 9 tracks in all in old school Island promo sleeve. Recommended.
