This is a no-brainer here. S.O.U.L. records are increasingly harder to find even through dealers, as it’s one of those records that collectors don’t trade in. There’s definitely a magical element to them. They’re what you think of when you imagine the ultimate rare funk album: black dudes in funny gear, prime vintage year (1971-72), non-major label (Musicor), awesome cover versions, heapings of funky flute, breaks for days, and most importantly, little filler. What Is It definitely ranks up there as one of the greatest funk albums of all time. From the signature break-sample track “Burning Spear,” to top notch covers of “The Ghetto” and “Express Yourself,” to the sick rock breaks of “Soul,” to the soulful masterpieces “Message From A Blackman” and “Memphis Underground” (my personal favorites), this album has it all. Recommended.
