St. Vincent won over fans and critics with her third album, Strange Mercy. Throughout the album she expertly juxtaposes elegance and menace, her languid vocals belie the anger and black humor of her lyrics. The album provides the perfect balance of experimentation and accessibility while introducing the idea that pop can be artful and high minded. St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) spent much of the time working on the album in Seattle. Clark removed herself from the chaos of New York in order to escape the information overload that the city and modern technology provided. After writing in Seattle she recorded with producer John Congleton at Elwood Studio in Dallas, Texas. The resulting album would go on to receive critical praise and ended up on many year end best of lists.
