A compilation of solo recordings from late Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Curated by his wife and children, Sky Blue collects music recorded in 1973 at the home studio of Townes’s longtime friend & journalist Bill Hedgespeth in Atlanta, Georgia. There are three covers—”Hills of Roane County,” “Forever, For Always, For Certain,” & The Last Thing on My Mind”—on the album, and two of the tracks have never been released before, “All I Need” and “Sky Blue.” “Blue Ridge Mountains” and “Silver Ships of Andilar” have appeared on previous full lengths (1972’s High, Low, and in Between and The Late Great Townes Van Zandt of the same same year, respectively), with the songs all characterized by the revered artist’s knack for crafting subtle melodies and his gift for nuanced lyricism. The tone is vulnerable and shrouded in pain throughout, and it’s surprising how much emotion Sky Blue is able to capture w/ such simple and stripped down songwriting.
