Third studio album from Norway’s Biosphere. Substrata was originally released in 1997 and was the electronic artist’s first truly ambient effort. The rhythmic elements of Biosphere’s (nee Geir Jenssen) early work was noticeably absent. In their place were subtle melodies, melancholic soundscapes and an otherworldly atmosphere that seemed to reflect the northern reaches of the planet. This was one of those records that stood out from the glut of ambient releases during the late 90s. It still sounds fresh today, especially after being remastered by Stefan Betke (Pole). Put this on and get lost in another dimension. Twelve tracks in all. Released by Biophon Records on double vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve. Recommended.
