Third studio album from Austin’s Spencer Stephenson aka BOTANY. Deepak Verbera goes on a tripped out tangent from the more beat driven material of Stephenson’s previous efforts. It’s a cosmic journey that incorporates elements of free jazz, psychedelic rock and dense ambient explorations. There are plenty of meditative moments to be found throughout the album, whether it’s the arpeggiated keyboard line that floats out of “Appears (Mini Verberum)” or the intense, droning choirs of “Valediction.” Stephenson’s compositions provide a sense of fractured euphoria through his use of collage to create uplifting ambient passages. His work recalls some of the finer moments of groups like Stars Of The Lid and Boards Of Canada. Ten tracks in all.
