Originally released in 2000, Mama’s Gun is Erykah Badu’s 2nd album. With Baduizm’s immense success under her belt, the iconic neo soul artist tackles more social and personal issues over a funk, soul, and jazz-saturated musical backdrop laid out by Questlove, J Dilla, Roy Hargrove and the likes. It’s important to note that the LP was recorded around the same time D’Angelo was working on Voodoo and Common Like Water for Chocolate, as the coincidence lead to many impromptu sessions between the artists and musicians involved w/ the projects, which resulted in a sound that links the three landmark works together. Highlights include: “Bag Lady,” “Didn’t Cha Know,” “In Love With You,” “Orange Moon,” “Cleva,” and “My Life.” This is the 180g, double LP reissue of the album, and it’s a part of Respect the Classics series.
