Jim James and company continue to push the boundaries of their sound. For The Waterfall the Kentucky based band escaped to Panoramic House, a recording studio that overlooks northern California’s majestic Sintson Beach. The sound of the album seems to have taken in the surroundings as there’s plenty of cosmic, nature based, psychedelic sounds to be had. The band reaches back to their more folk filled roots while exploring more electrified tones. James’ voice continues to be haunting, but he moves from spiritual overtones to frustrated romantics throughout the record. It’s an interesting juxtaposition that is underscored by the excellence that is on full display.
