FIrst time on vinyl for RSD 2014! Brand-new limited edition LP version in a heavy tip-on jacket from Sublime Frequencies. The Seattle-based label is known for acquiring and releasing obscure sounds from Southeast Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East, and brings us Jazeera Nights, a retrospective of live recordings by the celebrated Syrian musician Omar Souleyman on wax. The Tal Tamr native’s impressive catalog spans 15 years and features a vibrant mix of styles, “Syrian dabke, Iraqi choubi, Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish” and the album is a collection of some of his best, mastered from tapes that could once be found at nearly every cassette kiosk in Syria. Every track on the album is worth a listen, but “Hafer Gabrak Bidi (I Will Dig Your Grave With My Hands)”, “Kell II Banat Inkhatban (All The Girls Are Engaged)”, “Dazeitlak Dezzelli (I Signal, You Deny)”, and “Mandal/ Metel II Sukkar Ala II Shai (I Don’t Know/ Like Sugar In The Tea” stand out, if not for the blunt, straightforward track names alone, due to sick percussion arrangements, driving bass lines, and flavorful ney riffs.
