Weird and amazing. Os Mutantes formed in the late ’60s, and members Arnaldo Baptista, Sergio Dias and Rita Lee released this self-titled debut in 1968. The sound is undoubtedly influenced by classic acts from the ’60s (Beach Boys, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, etc.), but the group’s distinct flavor is truly a thing of singular sonic beauty, with fuzzy guitars, heavily echoed vocals (in Portuguese!), and almost giddy layers of horns and organs creating a colorful, psychedelic soundscapes that are easily on par with output from the Brazilian band’s American & British contemporaries. Check out “A Minha Menina,” “Tempo No Tempo” (The Mamas & The Papas cover), “Bat Macumba,” “Baby,” and “Panis Et Circenses.” Essential Tropicalia listening!
