We haven’t heard from Ray Barbee since 2009’s full-length collab with The Mattson 2, and now nearly 9 years later he’s back with a psychedelic long player supplanting his guitar-led sound for a new paramour: analog synthesizers. Tiara for Computer is an eclectic blend of downtempo beats (c/o Tortoise drummer John Herndon), jangly guitars, synth bass fuzz and Space Echo that sounds like it came from Conny Plank’s Studio in Cologne, Lee Perry’s Black Ark and electroclash-era New York all at once. Fully instrumental; the arrangements are extremely rich, often with an enveloping MS-20 lead bubbling at the top. It sounds exactly like the type of shit I heard in skate videos in 1996, altering the course of my music consumption forever.
