Sylvan Esso couldn’t have picked a better song to showcase their sound. “Coffee” encapsulates everything that makes the Durham, North Carolina duo of Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn standout. Their sound combines Meath’s soulful croon, which she honed as a member of Appalachian indie folk trio Mountain Man, and Sanborn’s electronics, which we last heard coming from country-psych rockers Megafaun. It’s club ready electronic music for the indie folk set, equally comfortable at the cafe and on the dance floor. Soulful and sweet with a slightly elusive sensibility. It’s a standout track from their eponymous debut. Turn the record over for “Dress,” a spacious cut that continues in the same vein as “Coffee.” Includes acapellas and instrumentals for both.
