Constantly evolving in sound through each of its albums, Sonic Temple, originally released in 1989, saw The Cult breaking the glass ceiling of the “indie outsider.” Produced by Bob Rock (Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Metallica), it’s the British band’s most commercially successful record with chart toppers like “Fire Woman,” “Edie (Ciao Baby),” “Sun King,” and “Sweet Soul Sister.” It retains The Cult’s core DNA while embracing deeper psych and hard-rock influences; you’ll notice post-punk atmospherics seamlessly woven into the harder, more powerful rock & roll stylings, and no other works released around the time sounds like it. In addition to the aforementioned tracks, check out the heavier, more aggressive “New York City” featuring Iggy Pop on backing vocals, or the swaggering rhythms of “Medicine Man.”
