Trevor Powers released three albums under the Youth Lagoon moniker, but the project came to an end in 2015. Mulberry Violence is the Boise, Idaho-based musician’s first solo effort, and it’s a tense, challenging LP that blurs the boundaries of genre. Heavily invested in industrial textures, the dark & chaotic moments of the record are punctuated by bursts off calm and harmony. Distraught melodies, clattering rhythms, and glitched-out vocals all somehow morph together together in Powers’s warped musical mind, and what comes forth is a brilliant, mind-expanding listen. Check out “Plaster Saint,” “Dicegame,” “XTQ Idol,” and “Pretend It’s Confetti.”
